The Vise That Didn't Close
Besk never meant to win this one outright. His cruiser trio, Integrity, Honor, and Purpose, existed to draw Kyphos's fleet away from the asteroid base entirely, buying room for Sarecotes and the rest to work the defenses over unopposed elsewhere. Kyphos didn't know that, and it wouldn't have changed how he opened. "All batteries on Integrity. We do not slow down for this." Three ships closed on Besk's flagship with nothing held in reserve, and the first exchange went to Kyphos clean, a critical strike finding Integrity before Besk's spread formation had finished dissipating the return fire.
Besk answered by feigning a retreat clean enough that it should have worked. "Come and get us." Kyphos read it for exactly what it was. "That's not a retreat. Nobody pulls back that clean unless they want us to follow. We're not obliging them." He held Temporal Arc's course rather than commit his nose into ground Besk had chosen, and the standoff that followed cost Besk the initiative he'd tried to buy — until his three cruisers found a different angle, a pincer instead of a lure, catching Temporal Arc in a double strike that landed on both flanks at once and nearly overlapped.
Kyphos gripped the console through the tremor and didn't waste time being rattled by it. "Forward and starboard shielding both compromised, my lord... Full spread, all forward batteries, concentrate on that ship." He stopped chasing the two flanking cruisers and put everything into Integrity directly, and Besk's rotating broadside, three ships cycling fire in overlapping waves to overwhelm Temporal Arc's generators before they could redistribute, came within a hair of doing exactly that. The shields held. Barely. The overload vented outward at the last possible second instead of collapsing in.
What followed was attrition on both sides at once, not a clean escalation either commander could claim credit for. Integrity took hull breaches, sensors flickering out, engines answering sluggish, damage crews working faster than the numbers coming in. "Sensors are down, High Lord. They are coming right at us. Have the Honor and Purpose close in and disable his engines." Temporal Arc kept firing through its own compromised shielding rather than pull back to reset them, weapons systems flickering but staying online through sheer redundancy.
Integrity's last barrage spread harmlessly across Temporal Arc's reinforced plating, the block clean, and Kyphos let it end there rather than press an advantage that wasn't really his to press. "Let them go. We'll meet again." Besk pulled his battered trio back to lick the damage, Purpose scarred, Integrity worse, only Honor coming through untouched. "We gave as good as we took. Well done. Focus on repairs." Neither side had anything left to press with. Neither side needed to.
